Dell confirmed that a recent SupportAssist Remediation update is causing blue screen crashes on some Windows PCs, and affected users may need to uninstall or disable the service until Dell releases a fix.

Dell has confirmed that a recent update to its SupportAssist software is causing blue screen crashes on some Windows systems.

The issue began after users reported random reboots and blue screen errors affecting Dell devices. According to Dell, the problem is linked to version 5.5.16.0 of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service, also known on some systems as Alienware SupportAssist Remediation.

SupportAssist is Dell’s built-in support and recovery software that comes pre-installed on many Dell computers running Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is designed to help with system diagnostics, driver updates, recovery tools, and troubleshooting.

Dell said its engineering team is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. The blue screen error being reported is:

For now, Dell is advising affected users to disable or uninstall the SupportAssist Remediation service as a temporary workaround.

Users can remove it by opening Windows Settings, going to Apps > Installed Apps, finding Dell SupportAssist Remediation or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation, and selecting Uninstall.

However, Dell also warned that uninstalling this component may remove access to some system repair points created by Dell OS SupportAssist Recovery. Users who rely on Dell’s recovery tools should be aware of that before removing the software.

If blue screen crashes continue after uninstalling the service, Dell recommends contacting Dell Support for additional help.

This is not the first time Dell software updates have caused problems for customers. In April 2025, Dell warned that some Latitude and Vostro laptops could experience blue screen crashes after upgrading to certain versions of SupportAssist for Home PCs. In 2021, users also reported that some Dell BIOS updates caused systems to fail during startup, affecting models including certain Latitude, Inspiron, and Alienware systems.

SupportAssist has also been involved in security concerns in the past. Researchers previously found serious vulnerabilities in Dell’s BIOSConnect feature, which could have allowed attackers to execute code at the BIOS level on affected devices.

For now, the main recommendation is simple: if a Dell system recently started blue screening or randomly rebooting, check whether Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 is installed. Removing or disabling that service may stop the crashes until Dell releases an official fix.
