Microsoft Extends Windows Server 2022 Hotpatching Support Through October 2027

Microsoft extended Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition hotpatching support through October 2027, giving eligible systems another year of reboot-free monthly security updates while helping organizations reduce downtime and speed up vulnerability remediation.

Microsoft has extended hotpatching support for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition through October 2027, giving eligible organizations an additional year of reboot-free monthly security updates beyond the product’s mainstream support end date.

The extension applies only to systems running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition that are already enrolled in hotpatch updates. Microsoft said the change is effective immediately, and the existing hotpatch update cadence will remain in place through October 2027.

Hotpatching allows Windows to apply certain security updates directly to the in-memory code of running processes without requiring a restart after each monthly update. The goal is to reduce downtime, speed up vulnerability remediation, and help organizations keep critical workloads protected without disrupting production services.

Microsoft confirmed the extension in an update to the Windows release health dashboard, stating that enrolled devices will continue receiving monthly security updates without requiring a restart.

“Hotpatching is designed to deliver protections against security threats without requiring a device restart,” Microsoft said. “By applying updates directly to running processes, hotpatching helps maintain uptime, reduces servicing disruptions, and shortens the time it takes to respond to vulnerabilities.”

The company said the extension gives organizations another year to continue using the same hotpatching experience while maintaining security update coverage.

However, hotpatching does not eliminate reboots entirely. Servers may still need to restart when installing updates delivered through the regular Windows Update channel. This includes certain non-security Windows updates and non-Windows updates, such as some .NET updates, that cannot be applied through hotpatching.

For IT administrators, the extension is important because Windows Server workloads often support business-critical applications, databases, identity services, and infrastructure systems where maintenance windows can be difficult to schedule. Reboot-free security updates can reduce operational disruption while helping organizations apply patches more quickly.

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition, Essentials, and Standard editions remain supported through the extended end date of October 14, 2031. The hotpatching extension does not change the overall lifecycle timeline for Windows Server 2022, but it does extend the reboot-free security update experience for eligible Azure Edition deployments.

Microsoft first made hotpatching generally available for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition in February 2022, initially targeting Windows Server Azure Edition core virtual machines.

Since then, the company has expanded hotpatching across more Windows environments. Microsoft began testing hotpatching for Windows Server 2025 in public preview in September 2024, followed by testing for Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows 365 in November 2024.

Hotpatch updates also became generally available for business customers running Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 on x64 AMD and Intel systems starting in April 2025.

Microsoft has also announced plans to enable hotpatch security updates by default for eligible Windows devices managed through the Microsoft Graph API and Microsoft Intune, beginning with the May 2026 Windows security update.

The broader rollout shows that Microsoft is positioning hotpatching as a larger part of its enterprise servicing strategy. As organizations face tighter security requirements and faster vulnerability exploitation timelines, reducing the number of required reboots can help close patching gaps without increasing downtime.

For enterprises running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition, the October 2027 extension provides more time to maintain existing workloads while planning future upgrades to newer server platforms. It also gives IT teams a longer runway to standardize update workflows around hotpatching, Intune, Azure management tools, and automated patch compliance reporting.

The key limitation remains eligibility. Organizations using other Windows Server 2022 editions, or systems not enrolled in hotpatch updates, will not receive the same reboot-free update extension and will continue relying on the standard Windows servicing model.
